5 Tips for Disaster-Proofing Your Wedding

Planning your wedding day isn’t all about the invitations, dress, and the cake. When you start getting into the nitty gritty of mapping out your big day, you’ll find that there are an abundance of items to plan for that you may not have originally thought of. There are, unfortunately, many ways disaster can strike at your wedding, throwing a (minor to a major) wrench in your big day. Luckily, there are many ways to plan ahead and mitigate these risks. Read below for the best tips towards doing just that.

1. Confirm with all Your Vendors

One of the largest disasters imaginable for any wedding is MIA vendors. This could happen for a myriad of reasons, from them having the wrong time or date scheduled to simply being unreliable. Prevent these situations from occurring by reading multiple reviews online about the vendors, asking the right questions, and vetting them as much as you deem necessary. Another way to prevent the risk of vendors not showing up is to confirm with them multiple times leading up to the event. Send them an email confirmation a month before the big day, a week before the big day, and also 48 hours before. These messages should include the date, times, and locations of where they need to show up. Ask them to confirm receipt of the message. If you don’t hear back from them within a couple days via email, give them a call to ensure that they saw your message.

2. Buffer the Timeline

Your wedding day can be pretty hectic, so you’ll certainly want to add in buffer times on the itinerary for yourself and the rest of the wedding party. Don’t let the rest of the wedding party members know where the extra time is built in, but pad the schedule with 15 minutes here or there. Having this wiggle room could help avoid major timing issues that can cause severe delays to your wedding as well as missed special moments that you can never get back.

3. Have a Back-Up Plan for Music

While you can have a wedding without flowers and a few other items if need be, it would be a shame to have a wedding without any music! In case the worst occurs and your band or DJ cancels at the last-minute or just simply doesn’t show, it’s wise to have a back-up plan for music. Appoint someone from the wedding party or another trusted loved one to have an iPod or other music source and speaker on deck with a playlist for this worst-case scenario.

4. Plan for the Weather

If you’re having an outdoor wedding, there are so many ways that the weather can not cooperate for your perfect event. Plan for this by having a backup option that’s indoors or tented. Have umbrellas and paper fans on hand for the heat, and provide blankets for guests if it’s cold. While we can’t control the weather, we can definitely control our reactions to it and how it’s troubleshooted.

5. Be Prepared for Unexpected Clothing Stains

A spilled drink or mud outside can cause a wardrobe disaster for any bride. If you’re taking photos before the ceremony, this is a time where stains tend to happen, particularly outdoors. Although there’s no fool-proof way to remove stains, talk to a professional dry cleaner ahead of time about your specific dress and learn what would work best to remove stains. Have the right materials and equipment on hand in case an unfortunate spill occurs on the big day.

Try not to focus too much on what can go wrong on your wedding day, and instead focus on all the great moments, memories, and experiences that are bound to happen. Taking these small proactive measures can help put your mind at ease and guarantee that you’re ready for anything that comes your way as you prepare to walk down the aisle.
